OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has released a statement on X, denying allegations of sexual abuse made by his sister, Ann Altman. According to CNBC, Ann filed a lawsuit claiming that Sam allegedly abused her from 1997 to 2006. In the statement, Sam, along with his mother and brother, vehemently deny the allegations.
The statement from Sam Altman and his family begins with a message of love and concern for Ann, saying “Our family loves Annie and is very concerned about her well-being. Caring for a family member who faces mental health challenges is incredibly difficult. We know many families facing similar struggles understand this well.” The statement appears to acknowledge the complexities of dealing with mental health issues within a family.
According to Sam Altman’s statement, his family has made extensive efforts to support Ann over the years. These efforts allegedly include covering her living expenses, such as paying her bills and rent, as well as providing assistance in finding employment and accessing medical care. The statement also claims that the family even offered to purchase a house for Ann.
The statement continues, “Despite this, Annie continues to demand more money from us. In this vein, Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about our family, and especially Sam. We’ve chosen not to respond publicly, out of respect for her privacy and our own. However, she has now taken legal action against Sam, and we feel we have no choice but to address this.” This revelation suggests that the family’s decision to speak out was prompted by Ann’s decision to pursue legal action against Sam.
“Over the years, she has accused members of our family of improperly withholding our father’s 401k funds, hacking her wifi, and ‘shadowbanning’ her from various websites including ChatGPT, Twitter, and more. The worst allegation she has made is that she was sexually abused by Sam as a child (she has also claimed instances of sexual abuse from others). Her claims have evolved drastically over time. Newly for this lawsuit, they now include allegations of incidents where Sam was over 18,” the statement reads.
The family vehemently denies Ann’s allegations, describing them as “utterly untrue“. “This situation causes immense pain to our entire family,” the statement reads. “It is especially gut-wrenching when she refuses conventional treatment and lashes out at family members who are genuinely trying to help.”
The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff has suffered significant emotional trauma as a result of the alleged abuse. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff experienced “severe emotional distress, mental anguish, and depression, which is expected to continue into the future” as a “direct and proximate result of the foregoing acts of sexual assault.”
Ann had previously made accusations against her brother, alleging that he had sexually assaulted her, but this is the first time she has pursued the matter through the courts.
