Neville Tata and Bhaskar Bhat Join Tata Trusts Amid Governance Changes

Tata Trusts appoints Neville Tata and Bhaskar Bhat; Venu Srinivasan’s term revised, reflecting generational leadership and governance changes.

The philanthropic arm of the Tata Group has made significant leadership changes at the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), reflecting a mix of generational transition and governance reform.

Neville Tata, 32-year-old son of chairman Noel Tata, was appointed as a trustee for a three-year term. Simultaneously, veteran executive Bhaskar Bhat, former managing director of Titan Company Limited, joined as a trustee. Industrialist Venu Srinivasan, chairman emeritus of TVS Motor Company, was re-appointed as trustee and designated vice-chairman for three years, adjusting his previous lifetime tenure to comply with recent Maharashtra regulations.

SDTT holds a 27.98% stake in Tata Sons Private Limited, India’s flagship conglomerate. The appointments aim to bring younger leadership through Neville Tata while maintaining oversight with experienced trustees Bhaskar Bhat and Venu Srinivasan. Legal experts note that Srinivasan’s adjusted term aligns with the Maharashtra Public Trusts (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, which limits perpetual trustees to a fraction of total trustees if the trust instrument is silent on lifelong tenure.

Neville Tata, who joined Trent Limited in 2016 and leads the budget fashion brand Zudio, represents a formal path for younger Tata family members into philanthropic roles. Bhaskar Bhat, an alumnus of IIT Madras and IIM Ahmedabad, played a key role in Titan’s diversification across watches, jewellery, and accessories.

These changes come amid broader recalibrations within the Tata Trusts. Earlier this month, a board decision did not renew long-time trustee Mehli Mistry’s tenure, indicating shifts in influence within the trust’s governance.

Observers say these appointments strengthen Noel Tata’s position within the philanthropic and corporate framework of the group. With the new trustees and updated tenure norms, SDTT is positioned for a phase of structural consolidation, aligning philanthropic stewardship with regulatory requirements and leadership succession.
