YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has reportedly stepped down from her role at Alphabet-owned video-sharing platform YouTube.
Wojcicki shared the news in a blog post on Thursday – stating that she plans to focus on her family, health, and personal projects.
“Today, after nearly 25 years here, I’ve decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I’m passionate about.” – said Susan
She also denoted that she’ll be enjoying an advisory role at Google and Alphabet as agreed with Google CEO Sundar Pichai,
In the longer term, I’ve agreed with Sundar to take on an advisory role across Google and Alphabet. This will allow me to call on my different experiences over the years to offer counsel and guidance across Google and the portfolio of Alphabet companies. – she added
Susan took on the chief executive role at YouTube in 2014, whereby responsible for creating a strong leadership team for the video-sharing platform. She has been credited for turning YouTube into a go-to video platform and a top destination for advertisers globally.
“The time is right for me, and I feel able to do this because we have an incredible leadership team in place at YouTube. When I joined YouTube nine years ago, one of my first priorities was bringing in an incredible leadership team.”
Susan disclosed that Neal Mohan, the Chief Product Officer will take over Susan’s role as the CEO of YouTube.
“Neal Mohan was one of those leaders, and he’ll be the SVP and new head of YouTube.” said Wojcicki
Speaking of the development, Google CEO Pichai in a statement said,
“Susan has built an exceptional team and has in Neal a successor who is ready to hit the ground running and lead YouTube through its next decade of success,” said Pichai
Susan also an announcement of her departure from YouTube in a tweet,
“Today, after nearly 25 years at @Google, I’m stepping back to start a new chapter. I’m inspired every day by creators around the world who bring people together on @YouTube. It’s been an honor to have a front row seat to this incredible community.” – Susan tweeted
In reply to which, Mohan extended his gratitude to Susan,
“Thank you, @SusanWojcicki. It’s been amazing to work with you over the years. You’ve built YouTube into an extraordinary home for creators and viewers. I’m excited to continue this awesome and important mission. Looking forward to what lies ahead…” – Mohan tweeted
Wojcicki, 54, has been at the search company for 25 years, starting as the company’s first marketing manager. She’s had many roles since, including helping create Google’s image search and leading teams that launched Google search for videos and books. she was among the first 20 employees at the tech giant – listed at number 16.
Mohan moved to YouTube in 2015 after serving as senior vice president of display and video ads at Google, responsible for the company’s business brokering ads on its own sites and around the internet. He joined Google through its $3.1 billion acquisition of the advertising technology company DoubleClick in 2008.
In December, Mr. Mohan served as the public face of YouTube’s successful bid for Sunday Ticket. He also acted as the platform’s spokesman before a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on business and national security issues at social-media companies last year.
