From PhD to Adult Content: Techie Earns $1 Mn, Slams Unrewarding IT Careers

Breaking away from the traditional career paths favored by many Non-Residential Indians, Zara Dar took an unconventional route. Texas-based Dar recently disclosed that she had abandoned her PhD studies to pursue a full-time career as an adult content creator on OnlyFans.

Zara took to YouTube to share a heartfelt video, where she candidly discussed her decision to abandon academia and embark on a fresh journey in a vastly different field.

Zara confessed that leaving academia was a tougher decision than she had expected. “I cried so much over this decision to quit. It was stressful,” she revealed. Zara also acknowledged the challenges of her new profession, stating “I sometimes wonder if the decision to become an OnlyFans member was a gamble or not.”

Zara revealed that she often questions her decision, experiencing moments of self-doubt. “Somedays I wonder if I am making the right choice—when I open LinkedIn, I see people of my age, climbing the ladder with senior-level titles… I start feeling a twinge of jealousy and imagine what it would be like to be in their place,” she admitted, offering a glimpse into her inner struggles.

Zara confessed that a part of her still fantasizes about an alternate life, one where she dons a polished suit and thrives in a high-stakes corporate environment, or perhaps becomes a professor, engaging with students, tackling complex problems, and publishing research papers.

Zara acknowledged that a structured and stable life has advantages, but emphasized that it also involves making sacrifices. “These talented people are a part of someone else’s vision. They will spend their lives working for a company, doing things that they don’t necessarily enjoy,” she said, highlighting the potential drawbacks of conforming to traditional career paths.

Zara further emphasized the potential downsides of being part of a large organization. “Their work might win someone else fame and wealth,” she noted. She also highlighted the stress and limitations that can come with a traditional 9-to-5 job, saying “They will constantly worry about getting laid off, planning their lives around their salaries, budgeting to pay bills, and being tied down to a 30-year mortgage. Vacations are rationed and squeezed into limited pay and time off days.”

For Zara, the benefits of her new profession far outweighed the lack of stability. She had finally gained the freedom and independence she had always craved. “I am no longer bound by the expectations of academic circles or the constraints of corporate offices. I can now learn whatever I want, not just topics deemed important by a funding agency or a company’s bottom line. And the best part is, anything I make will be completely my own. I am not contributing to someone else’s legacy. I am building my own brand and future. The rewards are my own to enjoy,” she explained, highlighting the sense of empowerment and fulfillment she had discovered.

Zara’s journey on OnlyFans began as a spontaneous side project, but it quickly evolved into a lucrative venture that exceeded her wildest expectations. In a remarkably short period, she amassed over a million dollars, which enabled her to support her family’s financial goals, including paying off their mortgage and purchasing a car. As she reflected on her accomplishments, her voice filled with pride, saying “Now I have an investment portfolio and am planning on buying a house soon.”

Beneath its gleaming facade, Silicon Valley’s reality can be far from ideal, Zara cautioned. While it’s often touted as a hub of innovation and opportunity, the truth is that the tech industry can be exploitative, frequently failing to recognize and reward brilliant ideas. Moreover, even the most exceptional minds often find themselves overlooked and underappreciated.

“Big tech for all its allure of innovation and opportunity, is a world where individual contributions are mostly invisible and rarely attributed to; instead, it pads the pockets of executives at the top. Employees are expendable. There’s a silent anxiety of layoffs. It’s a precarious, thankless existence,” she said.

Zara concluded her video with a hopeful outlook, saying “This life I am building is a masterpiece in progress. Every choice I make, every challenge I face, and every success I achieve will be a reflection of me. There are no guarantees but that’s what makes it exciting.” Notably, her academic background is rooted in computer science, with an MS degree from the University of Texas, as listed on her LinkedIn profile.

Sensei Kraken Zero, an X user, shared a video that quickly went viral, accumulating almost 500,000 views on the platform. The user added a brief commentary, stating “She used to make videos about neural networks, machine learning, and other tech stuff; now she will be making content of a different genre.”
