Google BARD AI returns wrong answer about JWST – costing $100 bn loss

Google announced Bard AI as the answer to Open AI ChatGPT on Monday. Though the company claimed that the Bard AI is going to be widely available to the public in the company weeks, a wrong result provided by the tool in its demo returned the wrong answer – hurling Google’s plan to outrun ChatGPT.

As a result, the tech giant Alphabet Inc. has lost $100 billion in market value on Wednesday. While Microsoft shares rose around 3% on the same day, and were flat in post-market trading.

In a demo shared by Google, Bard AI was asked about the new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope. Unfortunately, the tool returned three statements out of which one was incorrect that said, “the telescope took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system.”

Grant Tremblay, a prominent astronomer took on Twitter to quickly point out that the first image of an exoplanet was taken in 2004, and it was not done by James Webb Space Telescope.

Google on the other hand replied to Tremblay saying “Bard is an experimental conversational AI service…”

Grant appreciated that a tech giant like Google is using the name of JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) to advertise their LLM (Large Language Model),

“I do love and appreciate that one of the most powerful companies on the planet is using a JWST search to advertise their LLM. Awesome!”

Grant further exclaimed in the same Twitter conversation,

“But ChatGPT etc., while spooky impressive, are often very confidently wrong. Will be interesting to see a future where LLMs self error check.” said Grant

He further suggested that the AI chatbot tools like ChatGPT and Bard AI should cite sources for the information that they provide,

“and cite their sources ;)” – said Grant

Lastly, Tremblay showed that the existing Google search engine has shown the correct result to his query “first image on an exoplanet”,

The story doesn’t avast here as Microsoft’s partnership with Open AI is causing havoc for Alphabet Inc.

Microsoft lately announced its AI-Powered Bing search engine, alongside a new version of Edge browser that will utilize an advanced version of ChatGPT capabilities.

Google on the other side is lagging behind Microsoft in terms of launching AI products and testing them.

Google in a statement acknowledged the significance of rigorous testing of AI service tools.

“This highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something that we’re kicking off this week with our Trusted Tester program,” said a Google spokesperson. “We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.”
