Semiconductor and AI-chip maker Nvidia Corporation publicly denied on Wednesday that it plans to invest US $1 billion to build a data centre in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo León, hours after the state’s governor Samuel Garcia announced the deal.
“The company does not have financial investment plans in Nuevo León. The company’s support for digital transformation and technological progress in Latin America is based exclusively on cooperation initiatives, research and talent development.” said Nvidia in a statement to Reuters later on Wednesday
Earlier in the day, Governor Samuel García posted a video to social-media flanked by individuals he identified as Nvidia representatives, announcing that the firm would build a “green” AI-focused data centre in Nuevo León with a budget of US $1 billion.

The apparent mismatch between the governor’s announcement and Nvidia’s denial leaves the status of the project unclear. Nvidia did not clarify the identities of the representatives seen in the video or provide further details on the previously announced project’s status.

Analysts say that large-scale infrastructure deals such as data-centres typically require months of negotiations, formal memoranda of understanding (MoUs), and due-diligence by both corporate and governmental parties. Premature public announcements may reflect advanced talks, but until documentation is signed, the deal remains speculative.
For Mexico, a confirmed investment of this size by a major AI-chip company would be meaningful: it could boost job creation, strengthen the region’s role in near-shore computing for North America, and deepen the country’s presence in the fast-growing AI-infrastructure market. But with Nvidia’s denial, the promise appears to have stalled or remains at a preliminary stage.
Moving forward, observers will watch for official land-purchase records, construction permits, or a formal MoU between Nvidia and Nuevo León’s government. They will also look to see whether the governor’s office issues an update to reconcile its announcement with Nvidia’s statement.
