Apple Agrees to $95 Mn Settlement Over Siri Privacy Claims in the U.S.

Apple has agreed to a $95 million (approximately ₹790 crore) settlement in the U.S. to resolve allegations that its Siri voice assistant recorded private conversations without user consent. The settlement follows a 2019 class-action lawsuit accusing Apple of capturing and sharing sensitive user audio with external contractors for quality checks.

According to the lawsuit, Siri would sometimes activate accidentally, capturing and recording private conversations, including sensitive information such as personal medical details and intimate discussions, without users’ knowledge or consent.

Apple has denied any wrongdoing but has chosen to settle the case without going to trial. The company claims Siri was built with user privacy in mind and insists it never used voice recordings for marketing or sold data to third parties.

Eligible U.S. users can now file claims for a portion of the payout, with compensation reaching up to $100 (around ₹8,500) per person. The amount will depend on the number of devices owned and the total valid claims submitted.

To qualify for the settlement, individuals must have used Siri on an Apple device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. Eligible devices include iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Apple Watches, HomePods, iPod Touch, and Apple TV.

The claim is valid only for users who experienced unintended Siri activation during a private conversation, potentially leading to the recording and sharing of sensitive information without their consent.

Eligible users can claim up to $20 per device, with a maximum payout of $100 for five devices. To submit a claim, users must visit the official settlement website, “https://opezvoiceassistantsettlement.com”, before the deadline of July 2.

Eligible users may have received an email notice with the subject “Lopez Voice Assistant Class Action Settlement”. However, even without this notification, users can still file a claim by visiting the official settlement portal and providing the required details.
