Mira Murati, the former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, has officially launched her new AI venture, Thinking Machines Lab. This exciting development took place on Tuesday, with Murati at the helm of a talented team comprising around 30 leading researchers and engineers. Notably, this team includes experts who have joined from rival companies, including OpenAI, Meta, and Mistral.
In September 2024, Mira Murati announced that she would be leaving her role as OpenAI’s CTO, a position she held for over six years while leading the development of ChatGPT. Her decision was motivated by a desire to explore new opportunities, as she sought to “create the time and space” for personal discovery.

Notably, a report revealed that about two-thirds of the startup’s team are former OpenAI employees, including prominent researcher Barret Zoph, who departed OpenAI on the same day as Murati in late September. Zoph has been appointed as the technology chief of Thinking Machines Lab.
John Schulman, OpenAI’s co-founder, has taken on the role of chief scientist at the startup. Previously, Schulman had left OpenAI for Anthropic in August, citing a desire to concentrate on “AI alignment”. Furthermore, sources close to the matter have informed that additional former OpenAI employees are anticipated to join the startup.
Mira Murati took to X to share updates about her AI startup, revealing that she co-founded Thinking Machines Lab alongside a team of esteemed scientists, engineers, and experts. According to Murati, the company’s mission revolves around three core objectives: “Helping people adapt AI systems to work for their specific needs; Developing strong foundations to build more capable AI systems; Fostering a culture of open science that helps the whole field understand and improve these systems.”
“Our goal is simple, advance AI by making it broadly useful and understandable through solid foundations, open science, and practical applications.” she added.
As stated in the company’s blog post, Thinking Machines Lab aims to differentiate itself in the competitive AI startup landscape by developing artificial intelligence systems that “encode human values” and target a wider range of applications than its rivals. Additionally, sources have informed that the company is currently engaged in discussions with investors to secure venture capital funding.
