Following the widespread outrage, Ranveer Allahbadia uploaded a video on his Instagram and X (Twitter) handles in which tried to create a sense of apology for the controversial commentary he made on the show.
“My comment just wasn’t appropriate, it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I’m just here to say sorry. Many of you asked that this is how I wish to use my platform and obviously this is not how I wish to use it. I’m not going to give any context of justification or reasoning behind whatever happened, I’m just here for apology. I personally had a lapse in judgement, it wasn’t cool on my part,” said Allahbadia
“The podcast is watched by people of all ages. Don’t want to be the kind of a person that takes that responsibility lightly, and family is the last thing that I would ever disrespect,” he continued
“Need to use this platform better, that’s been my learning from this whole experience. I promise to just get better. I’ve asked the makers of the video to remove the insensitive sections from the video,”
“And all I can say in the end is, I’m sorry. I hope you can forgive me as a human being.” Allahbadia concluded
Allahbadia’s controversy turns into a legal matter
The obscene commentary made by Allahbadia not only caused a huge public outcry and backlash from the netizens; but it has become a legal matter involving, the police, politicians, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), and The National Commission For Women (NCW) among others.
Following the controversy, the Assam Police registered an FIR against five people, including the duo on the panel including Ranveer Allahbadia and Samay Raina, the host of the show. The Mumbai police also began a probe into the matter, following a written complaint filed by Mumbai lawyers on Monday who claimed obscene comments were made against parents, women, and their body parts.
On February 7, the NCW summoned YouTubers Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, and Apoorva Mukhija, among other YouTubers. The complaint alleged that Allahbadia, Samay Raina, and others involved with the show have used abusive language and made derogatory comments about women, and demanded severe consequences for those who are responsible.
The complaint letter by NCW alleged that Allahbadia engaged in sexually explicit discussions on the YouTube show – causing harm to public decency and morality.
“Complaint letter for registering an FIR against the serious crime of earning money under the guise of popularity through the online portal India’s Got Latent by Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, Apoorva, and other co-accused, deliberately laughing and using obscene words regarding private parts of women, making obscene comments, and hurting their dignity.” the letter by NCW stated
The letter also expressed a strong objection to Allahbadia’s comment, labeling it as “very sensitive“. According to the NCW, the show’s organizers and judges have committed a serious offense by airing content that deliberately demeans women’s dignity, with the sole intention of gaining popularity and financial gain through YouTube. The complainant alleged that this constitutes a “criminal act by deliberately broadcasting content that degrades women’s dignity with the aim of gaining popularity and earning money through YouTube.”
The letter further alleged that the show promotes “obscene thoughts in the minds of minors”, and demanded swift action, including an immediate FIR against the show’s organizers and a crackdown on similar contentious content.
Besides this, a case was registered with the Guwahati Crime Branch on February 10 by a Guwahati resident Alok Boruah against several YouTubers including Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, and Samay Raina.
A Parliament panel writes to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting
As reported by ANI, a parliamentary committee headed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Thursday wrote to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry (I&B) over inappropriate commentary made by Allahbadia – seeking amendments in the laws to modulate the content across social media and OTT platforms. The panel seeks a response from the ministry by February 17.
